Some information about the Tama mechanical drum and the Tama Star Bubinga drum line
Tama mechanical drums began production in 1965 under the name "Star Drums" and to this day this name is still used for the names of Tama drum models. In addition to drums, Tama is also a unit specializing in manufacturing and supplying sturdy, durable Hardware and drum mounting systems that do not violate the drum shell. Since then, drums (Bass, Tom Tom, Floor Tom, Snare) and Hardware from Tama have always been famous as one of the famous brands worldwide.
Tama Star mechanical drums are currently Tama's new mainstream line. The Star drum line is a remarkable advancement thanks to inheriting the knowledge base from the Starclassic line. By rethinking every detail on the drum kit to enhance resonance.
The Tama Star Bubinga drum is designed with a shell (only 4.5mm) that is much thinner than the Starclassic Bubinga drum line. Therefore, the sound is more powerful and generous. In addition, each drum shell is equipped with 9mm thick SFR (Sound Focus Rings) to help shape the drum structure. Newly designed hardware that minimizes contact with the drum wall, Remo drumheads and a super resonant mounting system all contribute to a great drum line that is incredibly simple.
Die-cast Hoops increase the sharpness and resonance of the sound, making it fuller
Die-cast Hoops hold the drum head in place.
Hoops are an important factor in determining the drum sound and can be easily adjusted. The Star drum has a zinc rim that is molded by pouring molten zinc into a shaping mold. They have a thicker shape and are more stable than 3-rim rims (the type produced by bending metal sheets).
In terms of sound, molded bezels provide sharper, louder and more powerful sound. In addition, the rim also makes tuning easier and keeping the drum in tune longer due to its density and shape consistency. These pads combine with the rich, highly resonant Star shells to create a very balanced and full sound.
Optimized shell bonding improves sound resonance
The system of shell connection details is optimized for acoustic resonance.
Every piece of hardware attached to the shell affects the resonance and sound of the drum. When developing the STAR drum line, every detail was carefully considered to maximize these two things.
Newly designed lugs for STAR drums feature a luxurious, sophisticated look as well as an extremely low-mass bridge construction for minimal shell contact. They follow the same principle by “floating” on the surface of the bass drum. STAR Bubinga mechanical drums also feature an imprinted badge and small wooden air hole inserts that help reduce the weight of the shell material and improve resonance and sound.
Hold Tight washers are designed to absorb impact, keeping the iron bars from loosening
Rubber washers are cleverly inserted to hold the drum structure in place.
The Hold Tight collar of the Tama Star Bubinga cue drum is designed to prevent the bar from being stressed when released. They consist of a cup-shaped stainless steel washer with a rubber ring inside. The vibrations created by the drum will create a gap between the tension rod and the iron frame, and over time the tension rods will loosen. From here, the rubber rings have the role of absorbing the force of vibration and keeping the tension rods in constant contact with the frames, avoiding loosening.
Quick - Lock Brackers (quick lock brackets for Tom drums) add convenience when disassembling
Quick - Lock Brackers (quick lock brackets for Tom drums) are easier and more convenient.
The "Quick - Lock" tom racks fitted on the Super Resonant Mounting System and on the Floor Tom Star Bubinga drums have some very special, groundbreaking features.
These brackets allow for quick and easy disassembly and installation. But the real unique feature of these stands is that when the drum is placed on the Tom Tom drum stand or Floor Tom stand, you do not need to insert and adjust separate memory locks to save the mounting position. Simply slide the latch switch on the Tom Tom drum stand and the stand will separate into two parts. When the drum is removed for replacement, the "lock memory" remains on the Tom drum stand or Floor Tom foot. This installation method makes setup quick and easy
This convenient Quick - Lock Tom Tom mount also has some hidden audio benefits. Following the same principle of reducing vibration transfer from the drum to the Tom Tom drum stand or Floor Tom foot, they also use rubber lining to add drum isolation and enhance resonance.
Super Resonant Mounting System (super resonant mounting system)
Super resonant drum structure with 3 triangular peaks.
To maximize the natural resonance of the drum, the Tom Tom must be mounted with minimal tension and stress on the shell and ring. The Tama STAR Bubinga drum features a completely new installation to achieve this goal, called the Super Resonant Mounting System.
The super-resonant mounting system has three contact points with the drum. Two markers are on the rim of the drumhead (AB), and one is on the rim of the bottom face (C). These three points form the triangle found on the drum. Two contact points (AB) support the weight of the drum vertically. The third contact point (C) supports the horizontal weight of the drum. The further away this third point is, the less support is needed when angled on the stand, naturally increasing resonance.
If you tilt the drum beyond a certain angle, which only applies to a minority of drummers, this mounting system works a little differently. If the drum exceeds a certain angle, the lower molding will no longer contact, or be supported, the lower contact point (C). Instead, another contact point (D), located on the drum strike surface , will work. Although the triangle formed by these three points is much smaller, it does not make it more difficult for the player. Therefore, the natural resonance of the drum is still preserved in this case.
To maximize drum resonance, it is important to prevent shell vibration from transmitting to the Tom Tom mounts. In addition to the above technique, Tama also uses rubber at each contact point between the housing and the installation system, helping to isolate the housing and significantly reduce the transmission of unwanted vibrations.
Bearing edges 45 with Roundover (bearing edges with standard 45 degree tilt and rounded curves)
Bearing Edges design according to standards increases sound efficiency.
Vibrations from drumming are transmitted to the shell through the contact point between the drum head and the shell. Therefore, the shape of the bearing edges is one of the most important factors in creating the sound of the drum.
The Tama Star Bubinga cue drum has a load-bearing edge shape as shown in the diagram. Its top is more rounded than the traditional Tama bearing edge. This rounded top provides more contact between the drumhead and shell, allowing vibrations to travel from the drumhead to the shell more effectively. Additionally, the edge's top position is 3.5 mm from the inside of the shell, further improving contact between the drum head and the drum.
Super thin drum shell, impressively powerful sound quality
Bubinga wood was introduced to the market by Tama and quickly became popular as a drum shell material. Due to its extremely high density, Bubinga drum shells deliver rich, super bass sound that impresses the listener. The Star Bubinga case is made to be much thinner than the Starclassic line. All are 4.5mm thick, including the Bass and Snare drums. These thinner layers allow the Bubinga material to vibrate more freely, thereby creating impressive resonance. All Star Bubinga magnets are sealed in 9mm SFR, to help keep the sound clean, eliminate unwanted noise and enhance the sound's unique quality.
