Cách Hiểu Quy Ước Đặt Tên Mã Đàn Của Martin Guitar

If you've ever bought a guitar, you'll realize that each manufacturer names their products differently. And this will definitely confuse you because there are countless other acoustic guitars on the market today. I myself went through this state when choosing my first guitar.

Martin also has code naming conventions for their guitars. Although these naming conventions have changed a lot over the past two centuries, Martin won't make you "sigh" when it comes to history! Instead, Martin will try to help you understand the names of the guitars in the simplest way.

Let's take a specific example on the Martin D-28 !

MEANING OF MARTIN GUITAR'S PREFACES

Martin Guitar Code Symbol

The first thing you need to pay attention to is the prefix. For example, the D in the name D-28 stands for Dreadnought style - hence, the prefix in the code represents the size and style of the guitar.

The following size and style prefixes are available, sorted from smallest to largest:

  • LX= Little Martin
  • DJr = Dreadnought Junior
  • 0 = Concert
  • 00 = Grand Concert
  • 000 = Auditorium
  • M or 0000 = Grand Auditorium
  • OM= Orchestra Model
  • S = Cutaway
  • GP = Grand Performance
  • D = Dreadnought
  • J= Jumbo

Do you know?

Martin invented the Dreadnought pose decades ago and since then it has become one of the most popular styles in the world, used by many guitar manufacturers!

MARTIN GUITAR MEANING OF Suffixes

Code notation for guitar martin

Now let's take a look at this rather tricky suffix. In the example above, the suffix is “28” and this number represents the style and meticulous decoration of the guitar.

Style and trim can be anything from the wood used for the back and sides of the guitar, to the body paint, or even the proportions of pearls inlaid.

For example, rosewood is rarer and more expensive than mahogany. So a D-28 (mahogany) guitar will be more expensive than a D-18 (mahogany) guitar. And a full gloss finish will cost more than a satin finish. So you can choose the number 10 (with satin finish) for less than the number 13 (with a full gloss finish).

The most popular decoration today is pearl inlay. This decoration takes a lot of time to inlay every bit of pearls into the guitar, so guitars with a 40-45 design often cost quite a bit.

But dear friend, more expensive doesn't mean better for everyone. Some guitarists prefer the sound of a mahogany guitar over rosewood, others (myself included) prefer a satin finish. Try different styles to find the best one for you!

Here are the suffixes in the names of the guitars, sorted from lowest to highest in style and trim:

  • 1=HPL (high pressure laminate) top, back and sides
  • 2= solid wood top, HPL wood back and sides
  • 10= meat sapele, satin coating
  • 11= top spruce, Sapele back and sides, full gloss paint
  • 12= black body border, full glossy paint
  • 13= white body border, full glossy paint
  • 15= all mahogany, satin paint
  • 16= all made of synthetic wood, top surface is glossy
  • 17= mahogany back and sides, satin paint
  • 18= back and sides in mahogany, full-gloss paint
  • 21/28= rosewood back and sides, full glossy paint
  • 35/36= there are 3 pieces of rosewood on the back and sides, full glossy paint
  • 40/41/42/45= rosewood back and sides, pearl inlaid, full glossy paint

The D-28 is one of Martin's Standard Series guitars and is loved by many musicians. If you've ever played this guitar, you'll surely know why it sounds so great!

There are a few other important letters that you can find when looking at Martin guitars.

• If the guitar has a C in the code, it means it has a cutaway
• If the guitar has an E in the code, it means it comes with an electronic device (Equalizer)
• If the guitar has an X in the code, that means it belongs to the X Series

An example of a guitar that fits all three of these criteria is the GPC-X2E.
