Ibanez divides their guitar lines into several series. Guitars in the same series are priced similarly, have similar construction and sound quality, and are manufactured in the same region of the world.

So why bother trying to figure out how much you need to spend? It's best to look at the series rather than the shape of the instrument.

Ibanez GIO Series:

Ibanez beginner guitars are in the “GIO” Series and typically cost between $200 and $300. These guitars are made in China and use Ibanez's own brand pickups. They are great for new players, but more experienced players will not find them very satisfying.

Some products in the range will have the “GIO” label in the name, but others will not. If the product code begins with the letter “G”, for example, GRGA120, then the product also belongs to the GIO series.

Ibanez Standard Series:

The Ibanez Standard series is huge and has models ranging from $300 to $1,000. These guitars are a step up from the GIO line in terms of tone and build quality, but they are still aimed at amateur players. They are produced mainly in China and Indonesia.

Models in this Series are the most difficult to identify because as a “Standard” Series, Ibanez does not mention this in the name. If the guitar is in this price range and does not start with an additional letter at the beginning, for example, “G” then it is likely in the Standard series.

Sometimes, Standard models are also called Series “S” models. However, these should not be confused with the S-shaped guitars, which can be found in most Series that Ibanez produces.

This series is quite diverse in price, from products that are more affordable and have many of the same features found in the GIO line, to more expensive products that have upgrades like pickups from DiMarzio ( instead of using Ibanez exclusive pickups).

Ibanez Iron Label/Axion Label/Genesis

Ibanez has Series Iron Label, Axion Label and Genesis guitars that typically cost between $1,000 and $1,400. The Axion and Iron Label lines are aimed at metal players and have high output pickups. The Genesis series has reformulated and redesigned the old issues of Ibanez's old legendary series.

Most Label and Axion Label guitars will have the Series clearly stated in the product name or the code will end in “IL” or “AL”. Genesis guitars often have the phrase "Genesis" in the product name.

Ibanez Premium Series

The Ibanez Premium line of guitars ranges in price from $1,300 to $1,600. These guitars are all made in Indonesia and are a step up from the Standard/Iron Label/Axion Label and Genesis lines which were made in China and Indonesia.

Most Premium models will have the phrase “Premium in the range” or the code name will end with the letter “P”.

Ibanez Prestige Series:

This is where things start to get very higher quality (and of course higher in price).

Ibanez Prestige series guitars are made in Japan and typically cost between $1,500 and $2,800. These are top-of-the-line Ibanez models crafted with incredible attention to detail and high-quality materials. Most guitars had Fishman, DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan pickups and new features like locking tuners, tremolo bridges and better finishes.

Ibanez J Custom Series:

The only series that beats the Ibanez Prestige Series is the J. Custom. These models can be very expensive and typically range in price from $3,000. They are also made in Japan like the models in the Prestige line. The most notable difference is that J. Custom models often come with rare and exclusive finishes.
